Then why is it that on linux and freebsd, I can get this colourscheme without doing anything, or by doing :colorscheme default? Why is it that peachpuff does what I want, and in the src it claims "no changes from the default except in the gui"? Then.why wasn't syntax highlighting working?

The default Vim on Mac OS X has syntax highlighting built-in so there's absolutely no reason to install a third-party package manager and another Vim if all you want is syntax highlighting.You only need one line in ~/.vimrc to enable syntax highlighting: syntax onĪnd another one to choose the right colorscheme: colorscheme peachpuff Don't add/change/remove anything in that directory.
